Ottilie Brodmann is designed by Elsa Brodmann. The label was named after Elsa's grandmother, who was a
royal dressmaker in Germany.
Elsa was born Jennifer Lynne Brodmann in Worcester,Mass. Her parents are both immigrants; her mother
is an anesthesiologist from the Philippines and her father is a chemist from Germany. After her mother
finished her residency in Worcester the family quickly moved to warmer climates, including Nashville,
Louisville, and finally New Orleans.
Elsa spent most of her time in New Orleans, attending middle school at Arden Cahill Academy and
graduating high school from St. Martin's Episcopal. She initially pursued a bachelor's degree in fine arts at
the University of New Orleans but then transferred to Academy of Arts
During her time in school she apprenticed with a jewelry designer, Denise Heffernan, for 3 years. She also
participated in several fashion shows, displaying three collections. Her first show was with the non-profit
organization Natural World Museum. Her six-look collection was entirely made from recycled fabric.
Her second collection, inspired by Parisian elegance, was shown for ArtSF's Second Anniversary Event,
held at their gallery in the Mission District of San Francisco. Items from her collection were shown to the
editor of SOMA magazine, who invited her to participate in the magazine's fashion and music event at Roe.
Three of her dresses were shown on models at the event and were included in the events section of the
fashion issue.
After graduating from Academy with her BFA in Fashion Design, Elsa worked for Baccarat,Inc. Craving a
different atmosphere and wishing to experience all four seasons of the year, Elsa decided to move to
Chicago. After arriving in Chicago, she worked in sales at Saks Fifth Avenue and then as a Wedding Gown
Services Coordinator for Davis Imperial. During this time she was a freelance costume designer for two
theater production companies-her first efforts were with 'The Entertainment Project', a children's theater
company, followed by a production with the 'Urban Theater Company'. Elsa also worked for the wardrobe
department as an assistant and costume designer on the set of the short independent film "Hollywood
Jerome".
Although she fell in love with Chicago, Elsa felt her business should be centered in her childhood home city
of New Orleans, where her father still resides. She moved there in January 2008 with her talented
dog/model, Pearl, designing and creating samples for her ottilie and Ottilie Brodmann Ready-To-Wear and
Bridal collections.
